Happy Diwali Every one !

Festival of lights

Just sharing a little details about the festival for friends who are not aware of it.

Just to give you a little background,

Diwali or Deepavali is the most popular and brightest Hindu festival, celebrated all over India ( & world ) with great joy and enthusiasm. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali literally means “row of lights” (Deep means ‘lights’, avail means ‘row’) and celebrates the victory of Light over darkness, good over Evil, knowledge over ignorance.

Significance of Diwali

Diwali has a religious significance, those who are aware of Ramayana, It is believed that on the day of Diwali, Lord Rama returned to his kingdom Ayodhya with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demon king, Ravana. To celebrate the home coming of their king, people of Ayodhya lit up oil lamps along the way to light their path.

Diwali Celebration

Diwali is a 5-day festival (begins with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai doom). Each day has its own significance and a tale to tell. Before the festival starts, houses are cleaned, decorated with lights, gifts are bought for the over ones.

Our house all cleaned and decked up

Day 1- Dhanteras

Start of the festival, this day is dedicated to the worship of the goddess of wealth, goddess Lakshmi. Its considered to be very auspicious to buy something precious–specifically gold, silver, new utensils.

Day 2- Choti Diwali/Naraka Chaturdasi

According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Lord Krishna defeated a demon king, Narakasur, freed all the captive princess whom he had imprisoned and returned home victorious, and thus this day is celebrated as victory of good over evil.

Day 3- Diwali/Deepawali

Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped in the evening. It is believed that goddess Lakshmi enters homes and blesses devotees with good fortune and wealth on this day.

Day 4 –Govardhan Puja or Padva

It is believed that Lord Krishna defeated Indra by lifting the Govardhan Mountain.

Day 5-  Bhai Dooj

The fifth & last day of festivities. On this day, brothers visit their sisters and perform a ’tilak‘ ceremony and pray for their longer life.

  1. Syam – Kottarakkara, Kerala – Lover of art, music, movies, travel and tea. Hailing from Kottarakkara, the land of Elayadath Swarupam and home of Kathakali. ”Randomclicks” is my photographic expeditions detailing my life, travels, and the art I am trying to create along the way. I started to showcase my photographs in Flickr and moved to 500px. My dream is to travel the nook and corner of India especially the less explored rural parts. I click all genres, whatever looks appealing to my eyes but more interested in travel photography. I love to capture long exposure photographs, landscapes, people and their daily routines and obsessed with festivals. In fact India is a paradise for festival lovers.

    1. madhuonthego – India – Hi friends, I am Madhulika, my friends call me Madhu. A Marketing professional who loves to travel and explore the world. I have been bitten and smitten by the travel bug right from childhood n this love for traveling runs through our family. Madhuonthego is home to all my travel Experiences, Stories and Itineraries. I hope this will help you in some way or the other. Like many of the travel bloggers, I usually don't travel solo and I am not a backpacker either (though someday I would love to go through bag packing experience). I travel with my family or friends and love to treasure experiences ranging from luxury stay, spa, theme restaurants, adventure activities to budget trips. My dream is to travel around the world, so practically my wish list is never empty. I love to explore unheard offbeat destinations. So far I have been to 10 countries. Other than travelling I like to try out different cuisines and experience new restaurants. I am a vegetarian by choice. I love to shop. I hope my travel experiences will help you in some way or the other!
