Best Thriller Indian Web series that you must watch

The weekend is almost here! And in the current scenario, when you cannot step out or make elaborate plans, OTT Platforms can save the day.

When it comes to watching crime and thriller web series, I have always relied on Hollywood or foreign series. But lately Indian web series is catching up. Some of them are equally gripping and thrilling. Here is a list of the best Indian web series which you should not miss out on. These web series are available on different OTT platforms, I have ranked them based on their IMBD ratings. Also, check Best thriller/ mystery movies on Netflix India  and 15 Best Mystery & Thriller series on Netflix

Top Indian Thriller crime Web series

1. Scam 1992

OTT Platform: SonyLIV

IMBD: 9.4

This series is based on the Book, The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away written by journalist Sujeta Dalal and Debashish Basu about the Indian stock market scam in 1992. It revolves around the life of infamous stockbroker Harshad Mehta, depicting his impressive career rise and subsequent downfall. Although not a usual action-packed nail-biting thriller, this series successfully holds your attention till the very end. Brilliant performances by the star cast specially Pratik Gandhi (who plays the role of Harshad Mehta) makes it all the more real and engaging. One series is entertaining and informative at the same time. If you haven’t seen it yet, do watch it.

2. Sacred Games

OTT Platform: Netflix

IMBD: 8.6

Probably one of the most popular Indian web series so far (and the first Netflix original in India), Sacred Games doesn’t need much introduction. I am sure, you would have watched it by now, for those you haven’t seen it yet, here is a brief description.

Based on the Novel of the same name by writer Vikram Chandra, Sacred games stars big names including Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddique, Pankaj Tripathi, Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, Radhika Aapte and many more. The story revolves around the series of events that takes place when a troubled police officer receives a clue from a gangster to save the city in the next 25 days. Although full of slangs and explicit language, the plot is intriguing, and suspense is slowly unveiled. This series has 2 seasons, both are equally thrilling and captivating.

3. The Family man

OTT Platform: Amazon Prime

IMBD: 8.5

I loved watching the Family man. The perfect combination of suspense, thrill and funny moments to keep you glued till the end. The series showcases Manoj Bajpayee as an underpaid government employee who is struggling to balance his family and work life. In reality, he is a secret intelligence officer for the Threat Analysis and Surveillance Cell (TASC) whose job is to prevent terror attacks. Manoj Bajpayee with his effortless performance adds life and humour to the show. Binge-worthy, the family man is an engaging and entertaining series.

4. Special Ops

OTT platform: Disney + Hot Star

IMBD: 8.5

A gripping spy thriller, Special Ops is not as thrilling and fun as “The Family Man” But it does succeed in getting your attention. Especially the twists and the suspense keep you wondering what’s going to happen next. The story plays in a flashback when the RAW agent, Himmat Singh (Kay Kay Menon) is questioned by the auditors about irregularity in the funds and expenses of his department. His explanations unveil different characters and the main plot.

5. Mirzapur (Season 1 & 2)

OTT Platform: Amazon Prime

IMBD: 8.4 (Season 1)

Mirzapur! Yet another popular crime and action series depicting the story of revenge, violence, hunger for power, politics and much more. Set in the backdrop of a small town in Uttar Pradesh, the story showcases Pankaj Tripathi (Kaleen Bhaiya) as the local Mafia lord and his hot-headed son and power-hungry. The clash begins when Kaleen Bhaiya hires brothers (Ali Fazal & Vikrant Massey) to handle his business. Abusive language and display of brutal violence, Mirzapur is not for faint-hearted. Although the local UP accent and brilliant performance by the star cast (especially Pankaj Tripathi) make this series entertaining.

The much-awaited season 2 is not as impressive as the first one. A lot of characters and unnecessary masala is added, nevertheless, you do have to watch it to know what happens next.

6. Kaafir

OTT Platform: Zee5

IMBD: 8.4

It’s not a regular crime thriller. A slow-paced, beautiful and sensitive story that features a Pakistani woman (Diya Mirza) who lands up on the Indian side of the border and is arrested as a suspected terrorist. She is spending her years in prison. A Kashmiri lawyer journalist (Mohit Raina) decides to fight for her and get her justice. Kaafir is based on a true story and beautifully depicts human emotions. Although it’s slow-paced you don’t get bored or distracted during the series. Deserves to be on your binge-watch list.

7. Asur

IMBD: 8.4

Asur is a murder mystery, that centres around a serial killer, who goes on a killing spree in the name of religion. The forensic experts try to solve the mystery. Asur has a gripping story that keeps you hooked on to the show till the end. The show also features the aspects of Indian Mythology. Arshad Warsi in the lead role has given a stealer performance.

8. Breathe (Season 1 & 2)

OTT Platform: Amazon Prime

IMBD: 8.3 (season 1) / 7.6 (Season 2)

I liked both season 1 and season 2 of Breath. Both are intriguing thrillers that keep you engrossed till the end

Breathe (Season 1) – This was the second Amazon original series in India starring Amit Sadh and R Madhavan in the lead roles. The story revolves around a single father whose son is suffering from a disease that needs an immediate lung transplant. The long waiting list for the transplant, makes R Madhavan plan the murder of other recipients to move his son up the list. Amit Sadh is an inspector who is fighting his demons working hard to crack the case.

Breathe- Into the Shadow (Season 2) – A little more dramatic and imaginative than Season 1, Breathe season 2 stars Abhishek Banchan and Amit Sadh in the lead role. The story showcases a couple whose daughter is kidnapped. Instead of demanding money, the kidnapper demands the murder of specific people. And then comes the twist in the story. Watch out for yourself to find out!

9. Criminal Justice (Season 1 & season 2)

OTT Platform: Disney Hotstar

IMBD: 8.1 (Season 1)/ 7.4 (season 2)

An unsuccessful small-time lawyer gets to fight the case for innocent victims (In both the seasons) who is accused of murder? Pankaj Tripathi with his amazing performance has added life to both the series, which otherwise, would have been dull and monotonous. Both the seasons of Criminal justice focus on innocent victims facing charges for the crime that they did not commit. (In the first season, the story is initially interesting, but later it’s unnecessarily dragged). Anyways it can be watched one time for Pankaj  Tripathi’s brilliant performance.

10. Patal lok

OTT Platform: Amazon Prime

IMBD: 7.8

This crime thriller will keep you engrossed with its thrilling storyline and brilliant performance by the star cast. Especially, Jaideep Ahlawat in the lead role as Inspector Hathi Ram Choudhary. This well-written crime thriller depicts social hierarchy enrooted in society symbolically mentioned as Swarg lok, Dharti and Patal lok. In the story, Inspector Hathi Ram is given the charge to crack the high-profile case of an attack on the acclaimed journalist. Each step unravels new suspense and link. The show touches upon different problems faced by urban society like caste discrimination, islamophobia, politics, corruption and much more. Gripping story and realistic picturization. Some of the scenes are gory and makes you close your eyes. In many places, strong and abusive language is used.

11. Code M

OTT Platform: ZEE5

IMDB: 7.3

A military lawyer (Jenifer Winget) is roped in to solve what appears like an open and shut case of murder of an Army officer in a terrorist encounter. But as she delves into the details, she realizes that there is more to it than what meets the eyes. Slowly mysteries unfold. The series has a good plot, coupled with a power-packed performance by Rajat Kapoor, Jenifer Winget in the lead roles.  It is binge-worthy.

12. Jamtara

OTT Platform: Netflix

IMBD: 7.3

Based on the true story, the series is set in a small village, Jamtara in Jharkhand. The story is based on a phishing scam involving the juvenile youths of the village. The scam involved youths pretending to be the representatives of big companies, asking strangers for their credit card details and transferring funds to their account. But instead of focusing on how the crime is conducted, this short show focuses more on the consequences of carrying out this scam on the lives of people involved. Although Jamtara will not intrigue you or leave a mark, it’s a decent one-time watch.

I have been bitten and smitten by the travel bug right from childhood n this love for traveling runs through our family. Madhuonthego is home to all my travel Experiences, Stories and Itineraries. I hope this will help you in some way or the other. Like many of the travel bloggers, I usually don't travel solo and I am not a backpacker either (though someday I would love to go through bag packing experience). I travel with my family or friends and love to treasure experiences ranging from luxury stay, spa, theme restaurants, adventure activities to budget trips. My dream is to travel around the world, so practically my wish list is never empty. I love to explore unheard offbeat destinations. So far I have been to 10 countries. Other than travelling I like to try out different cuisines and experience new restaurants. I am a vegetarian by choice. I love to shop. I hope my travel experiences will help you in some way or the other!
