Somehow I am in love with Switzerland and just can’t get over the heavenly beauty of this picture perfect country. Although I dint had the opportunity to explore it in detail but whatever I came across of this heaven was enough to left me spellbound.
Like I mentioned in my previous blog My Swiss Travel Diary though it was an official trip, I could manage to explore some of the near by surroundings. However as my trip was coming to an end I thought it would be worthwhile to visit atleast one of the popular places. So I decided to visit Lucerne, which was nearest to the Place from where I was staying. Thanks to my friendly and helpful colleague Nicole, who helped me and coordinated with two of my office colleagues, who joined me to Lucerne for that evening.
I must say I was looking for some company. My friends, Romana & Dominik made it a fun and truly memorable evening for me, guiding me through the city!
Lucerne City
We reached Lucerne in the evening. It was still bright & Sunny. Unlike the Cham (where I stayed during my trip) Lucerne is a popular tourist center, buzzing with lot of action. Surrounded by the breathtaking snow clad Alps with Lucerne Lake in the center and sitouts by the side of the lake, Lucerne is as charming as it can get.
Well not only the natural beauty, this quaint town also has a rich history and preserved medieval architecture to boast.
I had an opportunity to take a walking tour of the city with 2 of my friends
Here’s taking you through the glimpses, mostly through pictures!
After parking our car, we walked a little further and came across Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) & water tower, which are the landmark of Lucerne City. Built in 14th Centuary across the River Reuss, this is the oldest surviving truss bridge in the world.
Moving further towards the shopping street near the lake, my friends suggested that we should stop by at Max Chocolatier as they are one of the best and serve handcrafted chocolates. Being Easter weekend, they had lot of special varieties to offer. One we picked up was something with mint, though I was not sure by the look of it, but the chocolate tasted out of the world. A must try for all!
The main street also has many other souvenir shops as well as famous swiss watch showrooms!
Next pitstop was Church of St. Leodegar, which is a 17th Century roman catholic church with rich architecture and distinctive Gothic twin bell tower.

After spending some time at the church admiring its beauty, we moved on to visit yet another famous monument in Lucerne, The Lion Monument.
While walking towards the lion monument, I came across really beautiful and bright buildings!
The Lion Monument – The wounded Lion carving on a huge rock with a wish pond in front, commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. Many tourists crowded this place.
Finally it was time to admire the beauty of Lake Lucerne. We sat by the lake which looked splendid with many cruises and lights on them.
By this time we were already hungry, so we sat by the lake at Hotel Grand restaurant. The evening was followed by lots of happy chitchats, jokes, laughter, wines and some of the mouth-watering delicacies.
I must say that a short time spent with 2 of my lovely friends from Switzerland and one of the most memorable evenings of my entire trip. Looking forward to exploring more of this beautiful city soon!

I lived in Switzerland for 22 years, but didn’t visit Lucerne very much. Maybe I should go while I’m still here this summer 🙂

I like medieval architecture and it seems that Lucerne is just the right city. I have only been to Geneva but would love to add this to my ever growing list of European cities to visit. Thanks for sharing!

I’m living so close to Switzerland (maybe to close) and I’ve been to Lucerne only twice. Whatever you expect from a unique city, Lucerne offers an outstanding diversity. I love the beautiful lakeside setting and the nearby excursion mountains of the Rigi, Pilatus and Stanserhorn 🙂

I share your love for Switzerland! I especially enjoyed Lucerne. I wandered for hours on end and kept crossing the bridge just because it was so pretty! I think it is one of the most gorgeous towns in Europe!

I’m dying to take my kids to Switzerland, and this has just made me want to pack up and leave right this second! How would you think young kids would do with a self-guided walking tour like this? Doable or perhaps too much for little ones? The chocolate looks divine!

Lucerne seems like a great city. Just came back from Switzerland two weeks ago but I only made it to Geneva and Gstaad, so this will definitely be my next stop in that beautiful country.

Even if you’re not into the classical music that fills the air or art on every street, Lucerne has hundreds of added extras 😉

Really loved the way you have captured the essence of the place (though not a famous destination in Swiss in the knowledge of tourists like me) through your narration, pictures and an exhaustive guide even to guide an amateur traveler to thoroughly enjoy the place.
The pictures really tell a story and took me on a virtual journey to this picturesque place. Really looks like a place to visit in the middle of a European spring/summer. Have already this to the list of must-visit places during my future Switzerland trip.
